The Link Between Periodontal Disease, Heart Disease, and Stroke
February is Heart Healthy Month, so what better time to discuss the link between healthy gums and a healthy heart!
At first glance, gum disease and heart conditions might seem unrelated—but research tells a different story. Studies show that people with periodontal (gum) disease are nearly twice as likely to suffer from coronary heart disease.
There’s also a growing body of evidence linking oral infections to an increased risk of stroke.
At Calleros Dental, we’re passionate about protecting your overall health, not just your smile. Here’s why taking care of your gums could mean taking better care of your heart too.
How Periodontal Disease Affects the Body
Periodontal disease is a progressive infection caused by bacteria that colonize above and below the gumline.
As gum disease worsens, pockets form between the teeth and gums, and the infection can spread deep into the jawbone—causing tissue destruction, loose teeth, and eventual tooth loss if untreated.
Meanwhile, coronary heart disease occurs when fatty deposits build up inside the coronary arteries, narrowing them and reducing blood flow to the heart. This can lead to blood clots, heart attacks, and other serious cardiovascular events.
Why Is There a Connection?
Researchers believe there are several reasons periodontal disease and heart disease are so closely linked:
Bacteria Enter the Bloodstream:
Some strains of periodontal bacteria can enter the bloodstream, stick to fatty plaques in the arteries, and contribute to clot formation—raising the risk of heart attacks and strokes.Chronic Inflammation:
Gum disease causes persistent inflammation, which elevates markers like white blood cells and C-reactive proteins. Elevated C-reactive proteins have been strongly linked to heart disease.Weakened Immune Response:
Individuals with a high bacterial load in their mouths may also have weakened immune defenses, making them more vulnerable to vascular damage and cardiovascular disease.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Because periodontal disease is a risk factor for both heart disease and stroke, early diagnosis and treatment are essential.
At Calleros Dental, Dr. Calleros and our hygiene team perform comprehensive periodontal evaluations, including thorough gum measurements and X-rays to assess bone health.
If periodontal disease is detected, treatment may include Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy with Laser-Assisted Therapy to clean the pockets and eliminate harmful bacteria.
With proper care—including regular cleanings and good home habits—gum disease can often be controlled and its effects minimized.
Protect Your Smile—and Your Health
Your oral health is deeply connected to your overall health. Taking care of your gums doesn’t just prevent tooth loss—it may help lower your risk for heart disease and stroke too.
